How and why they used – A Gif is used to for picture formatting better well known as interchange format.

What the format means – This file format for mng means its for animated images.

What software supports them – They are supported by firefox.

How and why they used – This is used for free software reference implementations, and its documented.

What the format means – This format means that they can be searched, indexed, scripted and compressed.

What software supports them – They are supported by XML.
